The sticker price on the car — the residual value below is a percentage of this price.

The price you actually agree with the dealer — you can negotiate this on a lease, just like a purchase.

Fees the dealer rolls into the lease, such as the lease acquisition fee.

The residual value is what the car is expected to be worth when the lease ends — you pay for the drop in value, not the whole car.

The money factor is the lease's finance charge, written as a small decimal instead of a percentage.

Money factor and APR are the same charge in two forms: money factor = APR ÷ 2400. Change either one and the other follows.

YOUR MONTHLY LEASE PAYMENT
$—
Residual value (MSRP × residual %)—
Adjusted capitalized cost—
Monthly depreciation (the value drop you pay for)—
Monthly finance charge—
Monthly tax—
Estimated amount due at signing (down payment + first payment)—
Estimated total lease cost (money down + all payments)—

How it is worked out: the adjusted capitalized cost is the negotiated price plus fees, minus your down payment and trade-in — it is the amount the lease is based on. Each month you pay one share of the drop from that amount down to the residual value, plus the finance charge, plus tax. How lease tax is handled varies by state — some states tax each monthly payment, others tax the full price up front — so check your state's rule. Estimate only — the leasing company's quote is the final word.
